The winning ticket was picked in a draw on November 27, 2023, but no one has claimed it.

Under state law, lottery tickets in Virginia expire 180 days after the drawing.

However, because the 180-day deadline for this ticket was on a Saturday when lottery offices were closed, it was extended.

Instead, the ticket will expire on May 28 at 5 pm with officials asking players if they are willing to "throw away" $50,000.

The following numbers were called in the drawing: 2, 21, 38, 61, and 66 with Powerball number 12.

For the prize of $50,000, the ticket had to match the first four numbers and the Powerball.

"Whoever has the winning ticket should contact the Virginia Lottery immediately," lottery officials said.

When cash prizes are not claimed they are put in a fund for the community.

The Virginia Lottery which is in control of this soon-to-be expired ticket puts unclaimed prizes into the Literary Fund.

This helps to provide low-interest loans to areas for public school constrictions, renovations, and technology upgrades.

In the 2023 fiscal year, the Virginia Lottery gave over $12 million to the fund.

Meanwhile, the money raised from ticket sales is put toward K-12 education in the community.
